Ceramic stone is not what it pretends to be.

Ceramic stone, porcelain stoneware, Porcellanato, large-format tiles: this is the fastest-growing segment in interior fit-out. The promises sound compelling: marble look without the maintenance, wood look without the movement, concrete look without the cracks. And indeed ceramic stone can deliver much of this. But not everything. This document sorts the facts.

What ceramic stone is.

Porcelain stoneware (also Porcellanato) is an industrially produced product made from clay, feldspar, quartz and pigments, fired at over 1,200°C. The high firing temperature makes it extremely dense, water-impermeable (water absorption < 0.5%) and hard (Mohs 7–8).

The surface is printed using inkjet technology applied to the raw slab. This is why porcelain stoneware can theoretically imitate any material: marble, wood, concrete, metal, fabric. The quality of the imitation varies considerably between manufacturers.

What ceramic stone genuinely delivers.

  • Easy to maintain: no impregnation, no sealing required; cleans with water and a neutral cleaner.

  • Frost-resistant: unrestricted outdoor use, no frost-thaw damage.

  • Acid-resistant: lemon juice, red wine, vinegar. No problem. Unlike marble or limestone.

  • Consistent: every slab looks (almost) identical. Predictable, calculable, no surprises during installation.

  • Large formats: slabs up to 320 × 160 cm possible. Fewer joints, larger surfaces, more contemporary look.

  • Fire behaviour: A1 (non-combustible), the highest class. Relevant for public buildings.

  • Hygienic: closed surface, no pores, no bacterial uptake. Ideal for kitchens and healthcare buildings.

What ceramic stone cannot do.

And this is where honesty matters.

  • No patina: natural stone ages and becomes more beautiful over time. Porcelain stoneware does not. After 20 years it looks exactly as it did on day one. That can be an advantage. In many contexts it is a weakness.

  • No depth: the surface is printed, not grown. Under raking light the refraction that makes real stone look alive is absent. In large, light-filled rooms this becomes apparent.

  • Repair: a damaged slab must be replaced entirely. Natural stone can be ground and re-polished, time and again.

  • Edge chipping: porcelain stoneware is hard but brittle. Edges chip more easily than natural stone. Particularly a risk during installation with large formats.

  • Haptics: feels colder and more uniform than natural stone. Feet notice the difference, especially in barefoot areas (bathroom, bedroom).

  • Joint behaviour: with large formats (> 120 cm), joints must accommodate substrate movement. With inadequate preparation, stress cracks form, not in the slab, but in the joint.

  • Cut edge quality: visible cut edges reveal the uncoloured core layer. This limits use at window sills, staircases and edges.

When ceramics is the right choice.

  • High-traffic surfaces: hospitality, retail, reception areas, where maintenance must be minimal.

  • Wet rooms: showers, pool areas, wellness. Water impermeability is a genuine advantage here.

  • Facades and exterior applications: frost resistance without restriction.

  • Budget: when Calacatta marble is the target but not the budget, a high-quality ceramic imitation is an honest alternative.

  • Uniformity across large areas: when variation is unwanted (e.g. in minimalist projects).

When natural stone is the better choice.

  • Representative entrance areas: where material quality should be visible. An architect and a client will feel the difference.

  • Bathrooms with high aspirations: a marble bathroom ages with patina. A ceramic bathroom does not age, it simply stays the same.

  • Furniture surfaces and worktops: natural stone has a depth that no printing can replicate.

  • Long-term projects: when the building is designed for 50+ years. Natural stone can be ground. Ceramics cannot.

  • When it has to be genuine: some clients and architects accept no imitation, regardless of quality.

An honest comparison.

At its core the decision is straightforward: ceramics is a high-performance, low-maintenance industrial product. Natural stone is a grown material with character and ageing. Both have their place, but they are not the same. Those who want one and receive the other will be disappointed.

The best specification often combines both: natural stone in the places where it will be seen and felt. Ceramics where performance counts and nobody is looking closely.
